“Going Beyond the Walls” is a project designed by the Family Planning Association of Trinidad & Tobago (FPATT) to take sexual and reproductive health and education services beyond the walls of De Living Room (FPATT’s Youth Centre) to communities where there are large numbers of at risk youth. The goal of this project is to increase awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as increase access to sexual and reproductive health services among young people, including the differently abled, between 14 and 25 years of age in underserved and urban poor communities. With the implementation of this project FPATT seeks to equip young people with the necessary tools to assist them in making informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being.
De Rovin’ Living Room is a collaborative effort comprising staff of FPATT's outreach programme and De Living Room, which is designed to deliver sexual and reproductive health and education services to communities, hence the name “Rovin’ ”. This project is an initiative of the Youth Advocacy Movement (YAM), the youth arm of FPATT.
On each program, YAM sets up a booth to look like De living Room, a youth-friendly space that would be welcoming to young people. They also venture out into the community and engage their peers in discussions related to sexual and reproductive health and rights while encouraging them to visit the booth and utilize services provided on the mobile clinic by the outreach team. These services include contraceptives, pap smears, breast examinations, urine test for sugar and protein, voluntary counselling and testing for HIV. At the booth literature is available on all SRH topics, video documentaries are shown and discussed and there are also condom demonstrations. Clinic personnel are on hand to answer questions and provide counselling on adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues. Drama and monologues are also used to convey SRH messages
De Rovin' living room program is an on going project throughout the year but awareness is heightened during internationally recognized days such as World AIDS Day and International Youth Day; and local festivals including Trinidad and Tobago Carnival and Borough celebrations.
