Albumin

al·bu·min n.

  • A class of simple, water-soluble proteins that can be coagulated by heat and are found in blood serum. This indicates the level of protein in the blood.

    Normally constituting about 55% of the plasma proteins, albumins adhere chemically to various substances in the blood, e.g., amino acids, and thus play a role in their transport. Albumins and other blood proteins aid in regulating the distribution of water in the body.

  • Medicine. Of no danger to health; not recurrent or progressive; not malignant: a benign tumor.

  • Voluntary limitation or control of the number of children conceived, especially by planned use of contraceptive techniques.

    Any of several common, often asymptomatic, sexually transmitted diseases caused by the microorganism Chlamydia trachomatis, including nonspecific urethritis in men.

    Diabetes

  • Any of several metabolic disorders marked by excessive discharge of urine and persistent thirst, especially one of the two types of diabetes mellitus.
  • diabetes mel·li·tus n.

    1. A severe, chronic form of diabetes caused by insufficient production of insulin and resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The disease, which typically appears in childhood or adolescence, is characterized by increased sugar levels in the blood and urine, excessive thirst, frequent urination, acidosis, and wasting. Also called: insulin-dependent diabetes
    2. A mild form of diabetes that typically appears first in adulthood and is exacerbated by obesity and an inactive lifestyle. This disease often has no symptoms, is usually diagnosed by tests that indicate glucose intolerance, and is treated with changes in diet and an exercise regimen. Also called: non-insulin-dependent diabetes

  • A learned pattern of behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other person.
  • Examples of domestic violence are:
    • emotional abuse through mind games, name-calling, or put-downs
    • isolation from family or friends
    • economic abuse by withholding money or being prevented from getting or holding a job
    • actual or threatened physical harm
    • sexual assault
    • stalking
    • intimidation
  • The violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), sexual abuse (unwanted, forced sexual activity), and stalking. Although emotional, psychological and financial abuse are not criminal behaviors, they are forms of domestic violence and can lead to criminal abuse.

  • DRE

    Digital Rectal Examination

  • The digital rectal exam (DRE) is a screening test used to detect prostate cancer in its early stages, when treatment is most successful.

    The DRE is typically done during a standard physical exam for men. To screen for prostate cancer, the DRE is recommended annually in combination with the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test.
