FPA peer helpers have the
option of becoming members of the Youth Advocacy
Movement (YAM). The YAM is the regional body of peer
helpers affiliated with FPAs in the Caribbean. The
mission statement of the YAM is:

To empower young people to
manage issues concerning youth development including
sexual and reproductive health and rights.

In 1998, members of YAM
participated in the first ever Caribbean Youth Summit
hosted by UNFPA and held in Barbados. The YAM members
joined with one hundred and twenty (120) youth
delegates to develop the 'Regional Declaration of
Adolescent Reproductive Health and Rights' and the
'Regional Action Plan'.

The YAM meets bi-weekly to
improve their knowledge of sexual and reproductive
health issues. They network regularly with other
groups involved in promoting the health of young
people. These groups include CAFRA (Caribbean
Association for Feminist Research and Action), the
Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and the Youth
Advisory Group of the Inter-American Development
Bank.
